The Texas 200 is a difficult 200 mile trip over 5 days up the Texas coast in small boats and we made an expedition lugsail for Chuck Pierce’s Mayfly 14 with extra reinforcing and a blast reef for when things get crazy – and they certainly have!
It is very isolated and you are on your own if something goes wrong. Have to carry a lot of water or you can die out there.
It is not a race but there is support from the group if they are in a position to help. But if you boat breaks you have to find your own way home.

8 hrsThe mast on the Mayfly broke yesterday as I zoomed down the Land Cut at 7.5 knots. It’s 2 feet shorter now, after a 30 minute repair.
It broke at a rotted area, worked finefine , although I could only use the sail reefed with shortened mast. .
Michael Storer, this sail is fantastic.

Chuck has also assisted in a rescue which included retrieving a man overboard.
The sail is a slightly beefed up “Expedition” sail for Chucks Mayfly 14 – A Jim Michalak design that has been in the Texas 200 numerous times now.
The old sail was getting pretty tired.
This one has extra patches and a an extra reef for crazy weather – which is exactly what they have had. 30+kn at times.
The smallest reef is set at an angle. The lug rig on his boat tends to drop back a bit when very deep reefed so we altered the reef angle, cocked up a bit higher so that it looks right even when it does drop back.
